February 2020 Member Business Spotlight, HC Clay House – Augusta, MO

Have you ever had a dream about doing something totally different than what you are doing right now? Well, Kelly Dolan did have a dream and she made it a reality.  Kelly was living the corporate life for many years and decided that it just time for change-a big change!  So she and her husband Brendan went on the search for a property they could convert to a Bed & Breakfast.  Kelly loves to cook and entertain and with her corporate background she knew how to manage a big project.  After searching the area, they finally discovered the HS Clay House in Augusta, Mo.  The H.S. Clay House on 219 Public Street in Augusta, Mo was built in 1885 by Dr. Hampson Strother Clay for his second wife Marie Koch Clay.

They had 5 daughters and 4 sons, (whew ) and after Dr. Clay passed away Marie continued to raise her children in the home.  In 1948 Marie moved away to live with her son and the house was sold.  In 1986 it began to be restored to its former glory.  Kelly and Brendan purchased the house in 2019, and began to renovate right away.  The H.S. Clay house opened it doors in September for its first guests and have been welcoming guests from all over the country ever since.  Kelly’s goal was to have the Bed &Breakfast be luxurious and classic and she has  accomplished that goal.  Guests can choose from 5 bedrooms for their serene and relaxing stay.

Kelly is an awesome cook and really makes the breakfasts feasts for the morning.  She is offering a Valentines Day Dinner and hopes to create more “pop up” dinners. With the HS Clay House only 3 blocks from the Katy Trail and 3 blocks from downtown Augusta, it is in a fabulous location for a weekend getaway.  Check out their website: www.hsclayhouse.comfor more beautiful pictures of the B&B, including the pool and jacuzzi and make a reservation for your retreat from the frenetic pace of everyday life.  Hat’s off to Kelly for reaching for a different way of life and achieving it!

November 2019 Member Business Spotlight, St. Louis B Works

On Menard Street, in Downtown St. Louis near the Brewery and Gene Slay’s Girls and Boys Club, you will find a cool-looking building with some pretty cool people inside doing some pretty cool stuff. St. Louis B Works’ mission is to inspire youth to pursue their dreams, care for the world around them, and explore new possibilities through experiential learning. They first started as St. Louis Bicycle Works, which gives kids the ability to earn a free bike if they complete a safety and bicycle maintenance course. About 350 kids graduate from the program-kids that otherwise would never have access to their own bike-earning a free bike, helmet, light and lock. They also have a bike shop where you can purchase a refurbished bike or parts for new and vintage bikes. In 1966 they started St. Louis Byte Works through which kids can earn a complete desktop computer system by completing a 6-week technical skills course.

St. Louis Book Works was founded in 2011 promoting verbal, visual and cultural literacy through creative expression.  Young people in the program work with volunteer editors to write and illustrate their own books.

You might not see this smiling face a lot in the club anymore-she was just named Executive Director of Forest ReLeaf of Missouri and that will keep her pretty busy.   ForestReleaf is the only nonprofit community assisted tree nursery in the region. Since their beginning in 1993, over 200,000 trees have been planted in the Missouri and Illinois region.  Forest ReLeaf efforts have increased tree canopy in low-income areas and assisted in reforestation after major weather disasters. “Forest ReLeaf is a catalyst for restoring and sustaining our urban forests, with the help of thousands of volunteers.  Our mission statement boils it down: we are planting trees and enriching communities.

Meridith began her career in urban forestry management as a high school volunteer with Forest ReLeaf. When she and her husband Steve lived in Utah, Meridith was an Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator for Utah’s Division of Forestry, leading workshops, teaching and delivering keynote presentations focused on advocacy for healthy connected woodlands and forests.  In addition to her passion for promoting healthy urban forest management to enrich the local population, Meridith is the busy mom of Nathaniel, age 9 and Flora age 5.  Of course you might also know her as the daughter-in-law of Benita Perkins, our avid cycle and trekking instructor.  Congratulations Meridith!  You are truly making a difference in our community.

November 2018 Business Spotlight, Lindsey Worth & Scout & Cellar Wine

CAC member Lindsey Worth loves wine but she was tired of suffering from wine headaches.  She hadn’t put much thought into what is added to mass-produced wine, but after doing some research she was astonished to learn there are over 300 FDA approved pesticides, chemicals, artificial flavorings & dyes as well as gobs of sugar added to mass-produced wine.  That’s when Lindsey found Scout & Cellar clean-crafted wine which she began selling in August.

Scout & Cellar wines are different. They are lab tested to detect additives including chemicals, pesticides, dyes, artificial flavoring & sugar and screened by founder, Sarah Shadonix (Level 3 Sommelier), for taste before they are approved to be included in the S&C line up.  Lindsey jumped on board after tasting the wine to see for herself how delicious it is, and it really does reduce if not eliminate the wine headache along with many other undesirable side effects.

She will have a table set up in the lobby on Friday, November 9, with more details.   Stop by to say hi and learn more about clean-crafted wine – perfect for those upcoming holiday celebrations!   www.scoutandcellar.com.

Lindsay Dickerhoff, MD OB/GYN

This month’s Member Business Spotlight is Lindsay Dickerhoff, MD OB/GYN, a St. Louis native who spent her summers playing soccer & taking in shows at the Muny.  Lindsay attended Lutheran High School South which is where she met her husband, Ben and they’ve been together ever since.  After graduation, she migrated north to attend the University of Iowa where her affinity for biology, solving complex problems & working well in a team setting set her on a path for a career in medicine.  Following her undergraduate years, she went on to medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Rotating through the various medical specialties, she realized she was meant for a career in Obstetrics & Gynecology – a field that offered variety and the ability to perform in-office procedures & surgical operations while still developing strong relationships with her patients.

Lindsay continued her journey north to Milwaukee’s Medical College of Wisconsin OB GYN residency program working at 3 separate hospitals covering Labor & Delivery & gynecology service where she learned the true meaning of “controlled chaos”; it was her job to maintain the “controlled” part and when not managing the inpatient services, she rotated between clinic & operating room.   Once her residency training was fulfilled, she and Ben were eager to return back home, so she accepted a position with the SSM Health Medical Group in O’Fallon & Lake Saint Louis.

In their free time, Lindsay & Ben like to spend time checking out different places in St. Louis, particularly new restaurants (they’re still in search of a good sushi restaurant, so if you have one let her know.)  They also enjoy spending time at Eberwein Dog Park with their dog, Indi, a Shiba Inu/American Eskimo mix.

Excited to be back in her hometown, Lindsay is looking forward to growing her OB GYN practice and is currently accepting new patients.  For more details and to schedule an appointment, call (636) 379-6363 or visit her online: https://www.ssmhealth.com/find-a-doctor/doctor-details/lindsay-a-dickerhoff-md

Dr. Peter Gontarz – November 2017

If you’re a tennis player at the Club, you’ve probably seen Dr. Mike Grasso, playing and regularly being taunted during a lesson with Paul.  And recently, Dr. Grasso has taken on a new protégé, both on and off the courts – Dr. Peter Gontarz.  Peter started playing tennis here when he was 11 taking lessons from Craig Tidwell in 2001 and later becoming an assistant coach until 2010.   Since then, Peter received a full academic scholarship at UMSL graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biology, minor in Chemistry, and went on to complete his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree at the College of Dental Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.  Now, Peter is part of Dr. Grasso’s dental clinic team (Peter pictured far left, Mike far right) and he is welcoming new patients.  For the month of November, Dr. Gontarz is offering complimentary home bleaching to new patients after completion of a comprehensive exam and hygiene appointment.

An avid 4.5 tennis player, Dr. Gontarz is currently recovering from rotator cuff surgery on his left arm (his non-dentistry arm, thankfully!) and is eager to return to playing tennis and golfing.  In the meantime, he is staying active hiking and riding his Yamaha motorcycle, but also enjoys playing the guitar, participating in church activities and knows his way around in the kitchen.

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Gontarz, call 636.777.7700, and for more information on their services, visit their website:  www.mfgrassodds.com

Their teeth whitening process is backed by decades of research and recommended by dentists across the country. Smile Brilliant’s team is comprised of dental professionals with over 30 years of experience – previously creating custom-fitted whitening trays for local dentists. After realizing that over 70% of the cost and time associated with professional teeth whitening revolved around trips to the dentist (“chair time”), they developed a system allowing customers to create their own dental impressions at home. By eliminating trips to the dentist, they’ve streamlined the professional teeth whitening process, making it possible to achieve the exact same results from the comfort of your home and at a fraction of the price. Who doesn’t want to remove years of staining and get dramatically whiter teeth, right?  Smile Brilliant is extending a special offer for CAC members during the month of September – receive $20 off your purchase of a custom-fitted tray kit with code: cacsmiles

New York City’s Brilliant New Cookie Dough Restaurant August 2017

You may have seen a familiar face recently in People Magazine – if you missed it, read on for a recap.

When Kristen (Page) Tomlan, opened DŌ, her safe-to-eat-raw cookie dough store in New York City in January, she hoped people would be curious enough about her gourmet, nostalgic desserts to come in for a taste.  She was shocked when, during the first week of business, two-hour lines had formed around the block. “We were unprepared for how popular it was going to be,” Kristen, 29, tells PEOPLE magazine, “We were turning people away!”  She quickly enlisted her husband, Chris, 31, and her parents (CAC Members, Karen & Josey Page), her sisters, her brother & her brother-in-law to do everything from scoop dough to wash dishes.

Today the shop sells up to 2,000 lbs. of dough a day, as well as dough milkshakes, dough pies & fully baked treats. “Our dough is different from a cupcake or a scoop of ice cream,” Kristen says of her recipes, made with pasteurized eggs & heat-treated flour. “It can be eaten raw, baked or made into other treats.”

Kristen may seem like an overnight success, but the entrepreneur turned pastry chef was laying the groundwork for years. As a kid in St. Louis, “I had a sweet tooth,” she says. “I grew up baking and loved experimenting and making a big mess.”  That interest continued when she relocated to Manhattan after college to work as a brand-strategy consultant. But she didn’t fully embrace it until she found herself in the burn unit of New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for 21 days with a near-fatal reaction to an antibiotic. “After all that happened to me,” she says, “I thought why not do something I really enjoy?”

Kristen began to mention to co-workers her idea for a cookie-dough shop. “I knew nothing about starting a business, but I knew how to bake and I knew about branding & design,” she says, and created preliminary plans & a poppy logo for her dream business. She tested recipes in her tiny 450 sq. ft. Brooklyn apartment, got a food handler’s license, moved in two industrial freezers & launched an online business, selling tubs of dough in classic base flavors like chocolate chip & sugar cookie.  “I’d come home from work and make dough until 4 am every night,” she says.

Thanks to social media and word of mouth, business “snowballed so quickly” that she quit her day job and set her sights on a brick-and-mortar location.  Although running a small business can be difficult with 15-hour days, “it doesn’t feel like work!” she insists. “This isn’t just my job; this is my life.”

Club Taco – June 2017

When it comes to great food, the LaRuffa family sure does deliver – and they do catering, too!  Their Farotto’s Restaurant in Rock Hill has been a St. Louis fan fav for years, but have you been to their newest location, Club Taco, in Kirkwood?   As featured in Feast Magazine, ‘Chef-owner Gerard LaRuffa takes a playful gourmet approach to the taco by interpreting a variety of cuisines in creative ways – all within the confines of housemade tortillas.  His Deep South taco combines fried chicken breast from Buttonwood Farms, buttery mashed potatoes, roasted sweet-corn relish, spicy pepper sauce, and cilantro in a soft corn tortilla. The Sicilian Kiss tops a flour tortilla with eggplant Parmesan, oven-roasted tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, fried garlic chips and fried basil.’  Ay Carumba!   And they also hit the mark when it comes to outdoor dining with their 1,500-square-foot patio – perfect for lunch, dinner or happy hour enjoying a fresh Blueberry Mojito.   Sleep in on the weekend and join them for brunch on Sat/Sun from 9am-2pm with bottomless mimosas and delicious dishes such as cream cheese berry crepes.

BONUS!  CAC members get a complimentary house margarita when you show your membership key tag during the month of June!   Club Taco is located at 200 North Kirkwood Road in Kirkwood and open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 11pm, Friday & Saturday from 11am to midnight, and Sunday from 11am to 10pm.  For more details, call (314) 858-1488 or online: clubtacostl.com

Buoyant a Float Spa – May 2017

A tranquil place to relax mind & body in a sensory-free, gravity-free environment.

Buoyant is a unique new concept in wellness. The density of salt water in a float pod puts you in an environment where 80% of the gravity we usually feel is no longer affecting our body. A large portion of our mental & physical resources counteract the force of gravity on a moment to moment basis, and the relief of this effort leaves our body with a surplus of energy & processing power at its disposal. When left with this abundance, our body spends its efforts on resting, recuperating & healing anything that needs attention. In addition, the gravity-reduced environment allows our body to decompress, especially throughout the joints & spinal column.

We live in a world that’s over brimming with sensory stimulation. Our brains take in this information & looks for warnings of potential danger. However, our modern world of blinking advertisements, speeding cars, and honking horns overwhelm this system. Our fight-or-flight response is constantly firing creating unwarranted levels of emotional and physical stress.

When you are in a float pod this system is at rest. Our brains look for sights & sounds for warnings, but there are none. The float tank gives us a feeling of safety & comfort that is unparalleled by any other environment. Our fight-or-flight regulates many of the hormones associated with stress, including adrenaline & cortisol. When our fight- or -flight goes dormant, the production of these hormones drops lower & lower, allowing us to relax on a biological level. In response to feeling safe & relaxed, our brains start pumping out dopamine encouraging us to repeat the actions that got us to this state.

Tanya Popp, owner, recently relocated to St. Louis from Philadelphia with her husband & three small children and she wanted to bring some of the East Coast to the Midwest. When she heard about the Celebrate Tennis event, Tanya was eager to help –  it is near and dear to her heart, as she lost her mother to breast cancer 17 years ago.

Noxxu

Noxxu was founded by member, Dustyn Arney, who so generously donated two incredible driving experiences for our member promotions in December!

Dustyn said it occurred to him one day that while most people like exotic cars, very few can afford them, and even the ones who do own them rarely drive them.  He explored timesharing exotic cars, but plans started at $10k/yr. (more than a brand new Infiniti!) for a car that could only be driven twice during the year, and worse still, on the streets where they couldn’t fully be enjoyed.  His goal was to get people out of their video games and into real cars, even if it was only once or twice per year, but at a price they could afford.  In the course of doing this, he met people who owned their own exotic cars, and they told him why they didn’t drive them very often.  It was not strictly to preserve the value of the car, but it’s actually unsafe to drive them on the streets because other drivers stare and don’t pay attention to the road.  So, Dustyn added the token system where people can drive their own cars on the track if they want, and he tries to divide the day so they aren’t on the track at the same time as the novices.   In all, Noxxu is about the driving experience.  It doesn’t matter if you want to drive an exotic car, find out what your Mini can really do, or burn the tires off your minivan before you replace them, Noxxu provides a safe environment for you to drive.

THE COW PROJECT

TheCowProjectMember, Sandy Carter, aspires to make a difference through the Cow Project.  The vision is eradicating extreme poverty in African communities through micro-financing. Through a comprehensive training program, impoverished families transform their farms to enable caring for a cow.  The project requires that the families invest in their farms by building a zero-grazing shed for the cow, planting sufficient grass to feed a cow, and implementing sanitation requirements for the family and the cow, to keep the cow in top health.  Once all eligibility requirements are met, the family is granted a living loan of a pregnant cow, valued at $800.  Once the calf is born, a cow gives around 20 liters of milk a day.  The family uses about two liters for their own nutritional needs and sells the remainder which provides the family a small but steady income. The loan is paid back by raising the calf for 9 to 12 months, and then passing along that calf to another family that is trained and ready. Although the Cow Project is self-sustaining, there are still 2,000 families trained and waiting for a cow to begin their journey out of poverty!  Interested in being an integral part of this transformative process?  Visit their website at: uganda-cow-project.
